You know, you don’t see any professional football teams without a coach, do you? There’s got to be something in it for a reason. All these F1 guys, they all have coaches—sports coaches, etc. And they’re the best of the best. So, there’s a reason for that, isn’t there? So absolutely, a business coach should just be the norm, really.
As long as you’re a business owner and you want to push your business, improve it, change it, and you’ve got the mentality to go forward and adopt those changes, then a business coach should definitely work for you.
We were always short of time. I was a bottleneck in the firm, and I just needed some sort of solution. In accountancy terms, when you go through all your exams, they teach you how to do accountancy, but they don’t teach you how to run a business. You’re not always setting your own goals. You’ve got a rough idea of where you want to be, but actually providing a focus and putting it down on paper helps you think more about where you want it to go.
A business coach is focused on providing solutions. They’re not there to do the work for you. They’re there to provide you with experience and solutions and break down those solutions into how to do the job, how to make it better for you. The onus is on yourself.
I’m involving the team more, in reviewing work etc., before it comes to me. I review pretty much everything that goes out the door, from a quality control point of view. But it’s already gone through an initial review with one of the other senior team members, so it cuts my review time down.
As I’m the bottleneck in the company, if I were to spend just 10–15 minutes making sure I’m happy with certain documents going out, rather than spending an hour reviewing everything, it frees me up. It gives me more chance to look at the bigger picture for the client rather than being focused on the nitty-gritty. It provides a better focus for me.
We made the decision that before we started growing, we wanted to get rid of the chaos. That’s the stage we’re at right now. But naturally, we’ve grown each year. We’re up about 15% on last year’s turnover and 20% up on client numbers. So, everything is headed in the right direction.
At first, I thought I’d be taking a dip on net profit by investing in a business coach like Matthew. I figured the investment cost would take away from the bottom line. But we’ve actually made more. There’s much more light at the end of the tunnel now.
I’m not working silly evenings anymore. I used to do over 100 hours of overtime in January alone, but now we work 4.5 days a week. The same number of hours, but we’ve compressed them into a shorter week. Friday afternoons are either free, or they’re time to work on the business rather than in it.
The business has grown every year, and I’m becoming less stressed and burnt out. I used to think it would just get worse and worse. But by bringing the team on board to help with more senior-level tasks, and helping relieve the bottleneck, it’s really helped reduce the pressure.
Hear how working with a business coach helped shift perspectives, overcome challenges, and unlock new opportunities for success. If you're looking to grow your business while improving your quality of life, this inspiring case study is a must-watch!
