Typically, a coaching session, bearing in mind it’s all online, begins with the briefest of introductions. Then, we reference the goals that were set the last time. And I say “we” advisedly; it’s actually primarily the client who sets the goals as a consequence of our discussion.

Together, we identify the situation in which they’re operating and the goal that has become preeminent in their thinking at that time. They determine what the goal is, what they’re going to achieve before we next meet.

I check in with them as to how they’ve progressed. If it’s all gone swimmingly well, that’s fantastic. Then it’s about identifying the next goal, and the one after that.

If things haven’t gone well necessarily—in other words, if it’s a bigger project than they thought, or more complicated, or going to take more time and resources—we understand what it is that they need to get done in order to fulfil the goal.

Sometimes, those goals actually get superseded by events, overtaken as it were by other things. In those cases, we simply re-evaluate the priorities and reset the goals. My objective is to ensure that we’re always operating to succeed and achieve the most important things that the business owner has encountered at that time.
